About Scarlett

About Scarlett

I hold a master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from Wuhan University, and have taught Mandarin at Huazhong University of Science and Technology for more than fifteen years. Along the way I have taught more than 10,000 international students and logged more than 13,000 teaching hours.

Professional expertise

  • Elementary and advanced comprehensive Chinese — listening, speaking, reading and writing taught as one
  • HSK preparation and one-to-one Mandarin tutoring
  • Specialized courses including Medical Chinese and Business Chinese
  • Lectures on Chinese culture, across a range of themes
  • Learning plans built around each student’s goals, level and the situations they actually need Chinese for

Teaching and research

Beyond the classroom I have contributed to several Chinese-language teaching resource projects. I stay close to teaching research too — the textbooks, methods and assessment behind a course, not just the two hours in front of the class.

Teaching philosophy

My teaching connects language knowledge with real-life situations. I help students understand how Mandarin actually works, practise it in meaningful contexts, and then use it flexibly in daily life, in study and at work. Every learner gets a plan that fits, and is encouraged to work on weak points one step at a time.

Who studies here

Absolute beginners taking their first steps, students preparing for HSK, exchange students getting ready to come to China, and long-term learners who want to use Chinese confidently in their field.
